There are 6 broad themes in EVS that the CBSE board aims to cover for class 4 EVS. Environmental Studies deals with the topics that the student must be aware of with respect to his immediate surroundings. The environment consists of innumerable things. Since Class 4 students need to build a base of knowledge of their environment and surroundings, they are expected to have basic knowledge about these broad themes. The broad themes are Family and Friends, Food, Water, Shelter, Travel and Things We Make and Do. These themes are considered to be the building blocks of a child’s environment. CBSE Class 4 EVS also deals with all these 6 themes subtly.
As we all know, after the family is the school where students can socialise. Thus, the school is considered to be the secondary source of socialization which is rather a very important part of the student’s life. CBSE Class 4 EVS begins the chapters with the context of secondary socialization, that is, the school. The first chapter talks about Going to School. Let’s discuss the importance of The chapter and the emphasis it is trying to make about Going To School.
Going To School
Going To School predominantly talks about the various ways through which kids go to school. Some students are lucky enough to go to school by taking either a bus, a car or any other public transportation. But, students who live in remote areas have to face numerous challenges, accomplish them on a daily basis, and then reach school to study. This is done because the students have the intrinsic motivation to learn and attend school.
At the very beginning of the chapter, it explains how students who reside in remote areas of Assam have to reach school by walking over a temporary bridge that is made up of bamboo. The visuals which are present along with this information will make students realize how privileged they are who do not have to cross such dangerous bridges to reach school.
The second example is that of Ladakh, where students have to cross a river to reach school. They do this with the help of a trolley that is hooked by an iron rope. This shows the determination of the students of Ladakh and their willingness to learn by going to school.
The chapter talks about different types of vehicles that one can use to reach school.
For example, students who live in rural areas of Kerala use a wooden boat also called a vallam to reach school. Children in Rajasthan use a camel cart to reach school because it becomes too hot to cross the desert during the day and the afternoon. Similarly, children who live in the villages of plain use a bullock cart to reach school. Bicycles are also a cheap source of transportation that is used by students to reach school. Sometimes the people of a particular state assemble different types of things to construct a vehicle that will prove to be helpful for transportation. This is colloquially known as Jugaad. In Gujarat, the local people assembled a cart and the engine of a motorcycle to construct phut phut. This vehicle has proved to be an aid for children to go to school. Children also cross rocky paths in Uttarakhand, heavy snow in Northern Hill and jungles to reach school.
Apart from this, the chapter asks a variety of questions that are directly related to the students’ real-life experiences. These questions will make them think about the various types of experiences they have done till now. It also makes them understand the importance of school and the safety measures the children must take while they cross these difficult paths.
Conclusion
CBSE Class 4 EVS thus covers the broad themes and also divides them into sub-themes. These themes must be followed along with making the students aware of their surroundings and the importance of these themes. Environmental Studies becomes the basis of Social Sciences which a student learns in a higher class. CBSE Class 4 EVS has covered many such topics in a simplified manner so that children can grasp the concepts without being burdened with them.
