IGCSE Grade 6 Maths Identifying congruent and similar figures
|
State as similar or congruent.
Test congruency and similarity of the given figures.
The ratio of the corresponding side lengths between the two rectangles is 8 cm/5 cm = 1.6. Therefore, the length of the second rectangle is 10 cm × 1.6 = 16 cm.
A rectangle and a parallelogram can be congruent if their corresponding angles and side lengths are equal. However, a square and a rectangle have different angles, so they cannot be congruent.
The ratio of the side lengths between the two similar squares is 10 cm/5 cm = 2. The perimeter of the original square is 4 × 5 cm = 20 cm. The perimeter of the similar square is 2 times the perimeter of the original square, which is 2 × 20 cm = 40 cm.
Congruent figures have the same shape and size. In this case, two squares with the same side length have equal angles and equal side lengths, making them congruent.
Congruent figures have equal angles and equal side lengths. Therefore, if two figures are congruent, their corresponding angles will be equal.
A parallelogram and a trapezoid can be congruent if their corresponding angles and side lengths are equal. However, a square and a triangle have different angles, so they cannot be congruent.
Figures with the same shape are similar. Figures with the same size and shape are congruent.
Shapes are similar if they
