“A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new”- Albert Einstein.

What makes us a good student? What makes us a good learner? Is it all about the marks that we score in our term end examination? Or the grades that are bestowed to us by our benevolent teachers. Well ! To score excellent marks is a good thing, but do you actually become a good student just because you have scored well in your exams? Not really. You become a good learner when you accept your ability to make mistakes, not understand concepts yet not give up.

In short it is the growth that is most important in the process of learning. An individual becomes a learner the moment he arrives in this world. With a shrill cry most of the time, announcing our arrival. A person’s growth begins from the day he/she takes birth.

Importance of Growth Mindset in Students

In order to understand growth we need to understand what it literally means. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, growth means ‘Progressive Development’. And without growth one cannot consider himself to be a successful individual or a successful student. It is very important for students to acknowledge that a mindset that strives for growth is the one that thrives successfully.

Two Kinds of Mindsets

According to psychologists there are two types of mindset. Fixed mindset and growth mindset.

A “fixed mindset” conjectures that our ability to be creative and intelligent are static and these characteristics will not change in a meaningful way. We can become successful only when we accept this fact and avoid failure at any cost.

On the other hand, the “growth mindset” believes that intelligence is dynamic and can grow according to our capabilities. It does not consider failure to be an absence of intelligence, but a source of motivation to strive for better which in turn will enhance our abilities to thrive in different situations.

Out of these two mindset, whichever we choose at an early age determines our character and personality and also regulates the amount of happiness we can contain in our lives. If you choose to have a fixed mindset you will never be able to evolve.

Evolution requires the manifestation of a growth mindset. It makes us resilient and assists us to improve in our professional as well as professional lives.
